My own terriers

June 13th 1997:
After we had been waiting for over ˝ a year, we went to Sweeden to pick up our new "baby". She was very calm in the car, first she was playing around with my daughter Stine's long hair, then she fell to sleep. No sickness at all.
When we got home, we left her in the car while Jackson was feed. Jackson then went out for a walk. In the meantime Mahilia was shown around the house.
Then the big moment came along.
I was sitting on the floor with Jackson and Stine came in and placed Mahilia down on the floor. Jackson was very excited, his tail sounded like a drumstick on the floor, Mahilia didn't yell, no she was screaming when she saw him and tried desperately to run away.
Then Stine had to sit down on the floor and slowly crawl towards Jackson with Mahilia in her lap, Jackson was wild with joy.

...Do you think he's dangerous, he is huge...

...Oh she smells nice…I like her….do you think she wants to play?....

Filled with terror Mahilia let Jackson smell and lick her, after a while she calmed down, when she discovered that Jackson was friendly. (Thank God that he is such a good dog).
Then they started to play and she could borrow all his toys without any problems, there was just one problem. When he pulled with his usual power Mahilia had a small flying experience. But all the toy animal she was allowed to have.
When we went to bed that night I put a quilt next to my bed. Then I kicked Jackson down from the bed where he used to sleep. He understood the meaning and went down to sleep next to Mahilia.
And belive it or not they slept nicely all night. It is the fitst time I´ve had a puppie that didn't cry at bedtime.

...Oh, now he opens his mouth and licks me. It feels so nice...

June 14th 1997:
She is so small. Much smaller than Jackson was. She seems so fragile, that we are checking up on her all the time. I don't think she eats enough. She is only willing to eat when she is sitting on my lap and I have my fingers in her food, or ( and here is no need for comments) when I handfeed her.
Otherwise she is happy and the tail is up. She has been out in the garden, where she managed to bite off the top on all the flowers in the pots. So now we have moved them.
She is so charming, I am totally lost.
Mahilia also talkes a lot. She always try to tell me her needs. 3 times this night she was waking me to tell me something or to check that I was there. Once she was telling that Jackson had left her and was sleeping in my bed. After I kicked him down she was completely satisfied and went to sleep again.
Jackson has learned himself to bark without a sound comming out. I think that it is because he don't want to wake Mahilia from her sleep, when he sees the chance to some peace, so he can get some sleep himself. He was sleeping on the sofa next to me this evening, and everything was nice and quiet Mahilia was sleeping on the floor. Somebody walked by outside and Jackson barked by breathing loudely, not a bark sound came over his lips.
He is still very nice to Mahilia and today they were hunting each other in the garden. Mahilia is not able to follow Jackson, she is stumbling over her own legs. She is very fond of him and is searching for him when he's not in sight.
Did you know that Begonias are very nice in vases? I have to like them because they all drop like flies, when 2 dogs are running by.

June 15th 1997:
Mahilia woke me up this morning and then we had to eat. First the food into the bowl and it was sat down before her. She looked at me, then she whines and looks at me again. Well, then I sit down on the floor, and she jumps on my lap, sits down with her back to my stomach. Then she whines again, looks at me and then on the spot on my legs where the bowl is supposed to stand. OK, then the bowl is lifted on to the legs. Then she eats a bit, whines again, looks at me and at the bowl. OK, then my fingers are stuck into the food in the bowl, then she starts eating with no problem.
It can't go on like this, at some point it is going to be a normal day with work. So today at lunchtime I was planning on cheating her. So in her dogfood I mixed some strawberry yoghurt with water. She really liked that and forgot that she couldn't eat on her own, she just eat it all in no time.
Ha, ha, ha, what a great psychologist the world missed in me.
Fortunately she is also sleeping sometimes, so I can get some work done.

June 16th 1997:
Mahilia is now feeling at home here, and she is not as wellbehaved as she was. She is running around wagging her tail and barking. My daughter Stines hair is very interesting she thinks. She attack the hair, and pulls as hard as possible, and Stine is complaining.
Jackson is ready to put a stamp on her back and send her back to Sweeden. She also attacks him, bites his beard. Jackson growls, but Mahilia just hide under the table and barks back at him. Then she attacks him again. The they chase each other through the house, one after the other.
When she gets tired, she stands before me and starts talking. It sounds like something between a whine and a bark. It means that she wants to lay on my lap and fall to sleep.

Oh, now Mahilia is comming, she is wet on her stomach. Then there is no point in letting her out. Now I have to see if I can find the place of the accident.

June 21st 1997:
Now we have had Mahilia for about a week. As every day has gone by Jackson and Mahilia has grown more and more fond of each other.
They play for many hours everyday. Mahilia pulling his beard, and trying to pull him around in his collar.
She also runs under him (she is just able to stand under his stomach) and tryes to pull his penis. When she gets a good grip with her teeth Jackson runs for his life. Then the hunting season begins in the house. Sometimes Jackson is in front with some interesting in his mouth. Sometimes it is Mahilia in the front position.
Everything can be used for pulling purpuse, old socks, toy animals and old bones. Everything.
Mahilia stole a nice used sock from my daughters room. Jackson was very troubled because he knows that this wasn't legal. But he gave in, and suddenly he found himself pulling in the other end of the sock until I came along and saved it.

Epilog:
If you, after have been reading this, is tempted to get yet another dog?
I can tell you that we have only found this to be a positiv experience. Jackson became more lively and Mahilia feels a lot more secure than a "only dog". The adult dog gets a complete new role and is growing to be a pack leader. We love our old dog a 100 times more, after we have seen him perform his new role, he is so patient and loving.
